On January 11, 2020, Hong Kong-Chinese state media reported the first fatality caused by a new virus that had infected a large number of individuals in China and triggered a state of alarm across Asia.

The first instances were related to workers at a market that sold live fish, birds, and other animals. The health authority in Wuhan, China's central city where the ailment initially surfaced, said that a 61-year-old man patient died on January 9, 2020. He was a Wuhan market regular who had previously been diagnosed with stomach malignancies and severe liver illness.
